many thanks alex. T.B., as noted above -- tuberculosis. Phthisis is the old term for it. Plumonaris indicates that it was of the lungs. In one of my families, numerous people died of it -- in fact the only true story that the great-grandfather in question ever told was that his first family was "wiped out by a plague".
